Re: “Terry Pruitt wins Ron Little Memorial feature at Stuart”

STUART, Iowa (May 30) – Terry Pruitt of Dexter capped a wild night of racing Sunday at Stuart Speedway with a victory in the 20-lap Ron Little Memorial IMCA Modified feature.

Sunday’s event drew the largest crowd of the season and also had a record 130 race cars sign in to compete with the 305 non-winged sprint cars added to the track’s regular six divisions of racing.

It was a wild and wooly night of racing with a couple of hard roll-overs stunning the crowd to silence before both drivers walked away unhurt.

The first crash came in the first heat of the front wheel drive division when James Lyman of Winterset flipped violently on the front chute. His car spun wildly on its nose and crashed hard into the concrete wall separating the track from the grandstand, winding up on its top. Lyman climbed unhurt from his car and returned to race in the night’s feature.

The second came just after the start of the dwarf car main when Brent Detrick of Runnels slid sideways in turn two as he ran near the front of the pack. His car began a roll when it was struck by a car driven by Randy Rudolf. Detrick’s car then barrel-rolled and crashed down on the hood of Detrick’s car and wound up on its top. Detrick, too, walked away.

The IMCA modified feature was not without its moments, too. Terry Pruitt won, but the race was stopped for a time to remove a car driven by Wiley Chumos. After an incident on the track involving Chumos and Don Portwine ( Ames ), Chumos was given the black flag, but refused to leave the track. After several attempts were made to get Chumos into the pits, he, instead, drove to the back stretch and rammed Portwine’s car before finally retiring to the pits.

The race was held in memory of Ron Little, an Adel driver who suffered a fatal heart attack while competing at the speedway several years ago. Terry Pruitt took the checkers ahead of Ben Hoesing (Boone), Bobby Bowman (Winterset), Josh Gilman (Dexter) and Dan Sprunger (Earlham).

Jason Murray of Hartford won the IMCA stock car feature over Damon Murty of Chelsea, while Bobby Thompson of Des Moines won the 305 non-winged sprint car feature over Dave Farren of Des Moines.

Twin IMCA hobby stock features were won by Andre Burg of Adel and Brian Eddy of Waukee, while Jeromy Christensen of Greenfield won the front wheel drive feature and the team of Tyler and Warner from Casey won the cruiser car feature.
