STUART, Iowa (June 20) – Rex Parkison of Earlham won his first IMCA modified feature race of the season Sunday night at Stuart Speedway.

The racing Murray brothers from Hartford also had a good night as each won feature events – Jason capturing the stock car main and Jacob the hobby stock feature – while other feature wins were recorded by Bobby Thompson of Des Moines in the 305 non-winged sprint car feature, Mike Morrill of Altoona in the dwarf cars, Jeromy Christensen of Greenfield in the front wheel drive division and the Cole & Cole team of Ankeny in the cruisers.

Parkison led all the way in winning the 20-lap modified feature, while last week’s winner Ben Hoesing of Boone closed the gap over the last few laps. Behind them were Stuart’s Ron Bash, Earlham’s Dan Sprunger and Winterset’s Bobby Bowman.

Jason Murray topped the 15-lap stock car main as he held off Maynard Davis III of Runnells and  Dave Baugh of Jefferson, while Josh and Bob Daniels of Des Moines rounded out the top five.

Meanwhile, Bill Bonnett of Knoxville was seeking his third consecutive weekend win after he topped the field Friday at Des Moines and Saturday at Boone. He started 12th on the grid and worked steadily toward the front as Jacob Murray held off  the field. Bonnett finally grabbed second a couple of laps from the end, but the young Murray held him off for the victory. Des Moines’ Mark Steen, Dexter’s Jamie Schirm and Redfield’s Nyle Godwin rounded out the top five.

Proving that age doesn’t really matter when it comes to racing, Thompson led a trio of veterans to the wire in winning the sprint car feature, but his night almost ended prematurely. Battling for the lead, the front of Thompson’s car hit the rear of another and he spun wildly in turn two, but finished his trio of 360-degree turns headed in the right direction and lost only a couple of spots.

Fortune smiled, however, as the yellow appeared for another spin before that lap could be completed and Thompson was placed back in second on the restart. A lap after the green cam back out, he had the lead and won over Dave Farren of Des Moines and former “Masters Classic” Knoxville winner Jerry Crabb, also from Des Moines. Chuck Graves of Chariton and Don Dawson of Indianola rounded out the top five.

Morill charged through the field to win the dwarf car feature over Shane Hunter of Afton, Bobby Egeland of Jefferson, Van Meter’s Fred Schimmels and Des Moines’ Sam Coe.
