"Pruitt, Baugh notch IMCA wins at Stuart Speedway"
By Bill Haglund
STUART, Iowa (July 18) Terry Pruitt and Dave Baugh both pulled off exciting wins Sunday at Stuart Speedway.
Pruitt scored a victory in the IMCA Modified 20-lap main event after a heated duel that saw five cars all vying for the top spot in side-by-side, nose-to-tail action on the quarter-mile oval.
Veteran Dave Farren of Des Moines took the early lead and stayed up front through three re-starts, while being challenged by three Pruitts Terry, Chris and Mike and a fifth driver, Josh Gilman, getting into the action for good measure. On a late race re-start, Mike Pruitt went high and Terry Pruitt low, with Farren sandwiched in between and the crowd in a frenzy. As the trio of cars sped across the start/finish line, Farrens car suddenly began to slow with a driveshaft becoming dislodged and ending his run. After that, Terry Pruitt took command and won over Chris Pruitt, Gilman and Mike Pruitt, while Ron Bash wound up fifth.
Baughs run was just as thrilling as it took a last corner, last lap pass for the defending IMCA Stock Car point champion to pull off the win.It almost ended early, though, as Baughs car became sandwiched between two others, sparks flew and Baugh began to back out of the throttle, not knowing whether or not his car had suffered damage. Just after that, however, the yellow flew for debris on the track and Baugh, who had fallen out of the top five on the same lap, was placed back among the leaders on the re-start. From there, Baugh chased race-long leader Jason Day. On the final lap, Baugh went to the top side entering turn three, stayed on the throttle and powered outside Day to take the lead coming off turn four, a finish that, too, had the crowd buzzing. Behind Day were Curt Ganoe, Maynard Davis III and Bob Daniels.
Helped by a first-lap crash that involved eight cars, Bill Bonnett of Knoxville was able to come from the back of the pack to win the 22-car IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Bonnett had being involved in a heat race skirmish that put him at the back of the feature starting grid. By the third lap, Bonnett was already in the top five and went on to score an easy win over Nathan Waltz, Justin Maschke, Dave McDonald and Josh Reynolds.
Mike Morrill came from the sixth row at the start to win the dwarf car feature over Bobby Egeland, Sam Coe, Brent Detrick and Randy Bryant.
Chad Kugel of Ogden won the front wheel drive feature over Jeromy Christensen, while the team of Fuller and Burt captured the cruiser feature over Howell & Bushnell.
