STUART SPEEDWAY RESULTS (August 29)
By Bill Haglund
STUART, Iowa (August 22) – Veteran Dave Farren of Des Moines posted a victory Sunday night in the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature, highlighting the next-to-last racing event of the season at Stuart Speedway.
Also winning were Jason Day of Earlham in the IMCA Stock Cars, Jacob Murray of Hartford in the IMCA Hobby Stocks, Mike Morrill of Altoona in the Dwarf Cars, Alex Wheeler of Dallas Center in the Front Wheel Drive division, and the team of Cook and Warner of Casey in the Two-Person Cruisers.
Racing action Sunday was punctuated by a pair of hard roll-overs, one that stunned the crowd into silence during the IMCA Modified feature race.
Mike Pruitt of Stuart crashed in turn one and his car vaulted end-over-end twice off the end of the track, coming to rest on its wheels. After a few anxious moments, Pruitt was able to crawl unaided from his badly damaged car.
Michael “Wombat” Walrod of DeSoto, was involved in a three-car melee off turn two in the IMCA Stock Car main event. Walrod’s car flipped high into the air before coming to rest right-side-up on the track. Walrod quickly crawled from his damaged car.
Farren chaised John Mylen of Stuart for much of the 20-lap Modified main event before getting past for the victory. Mylen, Terry Pruitt of Dexter, Ben Hoesing of Boone and Josh Gilman of Dexter rounded out the top five.
Day led all the way in the stock car main event, posting the victory over Dave Baugh of Jefferson, Curt Ganoe of Stuart, Eric Stanton of Hartford and John Watson of Des Moines. Watson claimed Baugh’s engine afterward and Baugh agreed to sell.
Murray scored the hobby stock victory over a pair of Knoxville drivers – Justin Maschke and Bill Bonnett – while Jerry Hinton of Des Moines and Todd Riesberg of Dawson completed the top five. Jason Pruitt of Minburn finished fourth, but was disqualified when he refused an engine claim by Hinton.
Morrill used the extreme top of the track as he raced his way from the sixth row to victory in the dwarf car main. Brian Miller of Grand Junction, Cory Dennis of Granger, Fred Schimmels of Van Meter and Charlie Brown of Nevada rounded out the top five.
Wheeler got around 13-year-old Colby Gannon on the final lap to win the front wheel drive main. Gannon, grandson of Dave and Peggy Farren, appeared headed to his first win before the final-lap pass. Gannon was second, followed by Nathan Parkison of Earlham, Josh May of DeSoto and Michael Ross of Des Moines.
Cook and Warner won over Howell and Bushnell of Madrid in the two-person cruiser feature race.
The evening’s event began with Brandon Holbrook of Stuart taking a victory lap in Bonnett’s car in memory of his father, Dwight Holbrook, who died Saturday night after a battle with cancer. Brandon Holbrook also donated an extra $100 to the hobby stock purse in memory of his father.
The final event of the season at Stuart Speedway will be held next Sunday night. Race time is 6 p.m.
